Our work is about helping our participants to reach their potential through empowering them to speak and to be heard, while supporting their wellbeing. We do this through a training programme of core modules focused on using the voice, speaking skills and techniques, speech-making and using the body to speak confidently and to be heard.
The programme is participatory and creative, making it inclusive and suitable for all. The programme aims to empower participants to speak out with confidence, improving their communication skills and techniques. The benefits of the programme include enhanced well-being, stronger self-advocacy, and increased confidence in public speaking. Participants also gain skills that can benefit both their personal and professional lives.
Participants will learn essential aspects of public speaking, including creating and delivering speeches. Each module will cover breathing techniques, relaxation, and warm-up exercises, as well as providing tools for effective and confident communication. Modules can be tailored to suit the specific needs of the participants, allowing for a personalised experience.
Mencap
We are a neuro-affirming charity that celebrates and respects the diversity of ways people experience and express themselves in the world. We recognise that individuals may use different language to describe learning disabilities, differences, or difficulties — and that these preferences are personal, valid, and can change over time.
We are committed to listening, learning, and working collaboratively with the people we support. We aim to use language that is respectful, empowering, and aligned with the preferences of our participants. As part of this commitment, we continually reflect on our language and understanding to ensure our approach remains inclusive, affirming, and up to date.
